PDA Union Rep Daniela shares her learnings from the event, which saw her take part in talks and activities relating to inequality, women’s rights and how to take action.
The women’s event on 11th March jointly organised by NAWP and the PDA was, without any doubt, a very insightful experience. Taking part was a great honour and I wish to share some reflective observations on how we can change perceptions and further progress women’s equality agenda.
Awareness of gender inequality is a key factor in addressing the problem. Helen Lewis, PDA Regional Official, said ‘Once you see it, you cannot unsee it’; she detailed how witnessing and understanding inequality changes a person forever and helps translate the newly gained awareness into accountability which will subsequently enable a person to take action.
‘Individual Collectivism’ is a movement where women commit to individual acts, behaviours and mindsets that can collectively progress equality. Collette Bradford, PDA Head of Organising and Engagement, introduced this concept, and also explained how we needed to celebrate women’s accomplishments and achievements and take a stance to call out inequality.
The women’s event was a great opportunity for sharing stories and successes as well as building relationships and providing encouragement. I am delighted that NAWP and the PDA are organising such events and I look forward to future initiatives.
