  Last month, PDA student members, Liz Boateng and Natalie Mbonjani attended the GFTU’s latest Young Members’ Development Weekend (YMDW). The three-day training course aims to educate and engage young trade union members through interactive and informative sessions.

  The PDA recently caught up with Olivia Donnelly, winner of the Student Leadership category in the 2024 Northern Ireland Healthcare Awards to discuss the steps she took while studying at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) to contribute to the world of pharmacy. PDA member, Olivia also shared her advice to first-year pharmacy students and where her pharmacy journey will take her next.  

• House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee agree pharmacy students should be included in the NHS Learning Support Fund

  The PDA’s Fair Funding campaign was launched November 2023 to ask the government to include pharmacy students in the NHS Learning Support Fund (LSF), a supplementary fund that supports healthcare students in England throughout their pre-registration undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

  The 25th Northern Ireland Healthcare Awards took place last month during a special silver milestone celebration to honour the hard work and dedication of the region’s leading healthcare professionals. 

• Pharmacist Support launches Student ACTNow campaign

• PDA students continue to campaign for fair funding – now with the support of their MPs!

  The campaign led by PDA Student Reps for fair funding for pharmacy students began last year and has gathered considerable support. Through MPharm students, PDA Student Reps and others sending letters to their MPs, the issue of pharmacy students being left out of the scope of the NHS Learning Support Fund has (LSF) been escalated to the Minister for Health by several MPs.

  PDA Student Rep, Leah Wakefield-Coates recently attended the General Federation of Trade Union’s (GFTU) Young Members Development Weekend and has reflected on her experience and what she learned during the weekend.

  The PDA student campaign to secure fair financial support for MPharm students is gathering pace with multiple members of parliament now responding to the issue.
