The PDA stands resolutely for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), and the BAME Pharmacists’ Network is one of four equality groups within the PDA family, working year-round to improve EDI across pharmacy and in wider society.
The PDA reminds all members, pharmacists, and pharmacy employers that tackling all forms of racism, including islamophobia, should not be limited to responding to the current issue of criminal riots, but is an everyday responsibility for everyone. As the PDA has said many times, “Either we all live in an equal world, or none of us do.”
The BAME Pharmacists’ Network, and the wider PDA, are acting every day to address racism. This includes helping to educate the pharmacy sector and others with resources such as the islamophobia and race and ethnicity terminology factsheets and supporting individual members who experience racism at work.
A potential contributory factor to the current riots is the normalisation of racist rhetoric and the PDA believes that to prevent such situations, it is important that this needs to be tackled early and locally, including in workplaces. To help employers ensure their workplaces do not house racism, the PDA created an anti-racist toolkit and encourages all members to ask their employers to use this resource.
Pharmacist and pharmacy students can get involved with the BAME Pharmacists’ Network which welcomes those from BAME backgrounds and non-BAME allies. Allyship is about working towards creating diverse and inclusive communities by standing up for the rights of those who are marginalised. Although some may not be part of the BAME community, they can still support this group and make the effort to understand their struggle and use their voice alongside others.
