As part of EPhEU’s Medicines to Ukraine campaign, 15,000 posters have been delivered to community pharmacies across the UK. Pharmacists have been asked to display the poster prominently in their pharmacy windows to raise awareness and encourage people to donate. Donations can be made in several ways, including through a QR code contained in the poster and via the Medicines to Ukraine website.
The European Association of Employed community Pharmacists in Europe (EPhEU) began the appeal shortly after Russia invaded further parts of Ukraine in February 2022. This was in response to calls from fellow pharmacists in Ukraine, asking for support around the availability of vital medicines. Medicines to Ukraine has so far raised over £3m, with over £220,000 of that coming from UK contributions.
Having made the necessary connections and established processes so that pharmacists can help in such scenarios, EPhEU representatives now manage the liaison with Ukraine to confirm what medicines are required, source the products and arrange their delivery into a country which is at war. The distribution of these posters will help secure more funding to enable further consignments of medicines to be provided.
PDA Chairman and Secretary General of EPhEU, Mark Koziol, has seen the impact that the campaign is having at first hand when he accompanied consignments of medicines across the border from Poland to be distributed to Ukrainian hospitals.
Mark said, “On behalf of EPhEU and the PDA, we would like to thank Alliance Healthcare, the Healthcare Distribution Association, and the NPA for their support in ensuring that all UK community pharmacies can participate in this important initiative. We ask every pharmacy owner, manager and pharmacist to ensure posters are displayed where they can be seen by the public.
The need for essential medicines in Ukraine to treat civilian and military patients continues, and by donating to the campaign we can support the health community there to provide the best possible care.”
Mark continued, “While this campaign is about Ukraine, we also hope that the model of support which we have created, which has pharmacists at its core and is based on supplying what is needed by clinicians can be widely adopted and replicated in other areas of the World. There are other disasters and conflicts where essential medicines will be needed and pharmacists can help, this is something we are progressing with the International Pharmaceutical Federation.”
