PDA members unite at national meeting to address the NHS reorganisation impact

Over 120 members recently attended a national PDA member meeting for pharmacists working within Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and Commissioning Support Units (CSUs). Members were updated on the PDA’s ongoing work to ensure members’ views are raised and challenge bad practice. They were also given the opportunity to share their concerns amid ongoing organisational restructuring.

Members remaining in ICBs and CSUs shared experiences of the impact of workforce reductions, including increased workloads and concerns about service continuity for those remaining in post. These emerging issues will continue to inform the PDA’s work as it engages with employers and advocates for fair treatment and safe working conditions. Employers have a duty of care for the health, safety, and wellbeing of their staff. The PDA will remind executive leads of the necessity of reassessing workloads following significant staffing cuts.

Liz Larkin, PDA Organiser said, “We know how concerned members are and have been for a long period of time now. This was reflected in the high volume of those who attended the member meeting. The PDA is representing the views of members both nationally and locally and will continue to do so. We are particularly concerned about the level of workload members are facing as other staff exit the organisations. We are working hard and demanding from leaders that there are clear plans on work reduction to ensure our members’ health and safety.”

The PDA is continuing to push for clear and fair pathways for members facing redundancy, with guidance available to support them through the process. The PDA and its legal team have been supporting members and reminds those impacted that legal support can be offered for those who don’t think their offer of suitable alternative employment is appropriate or feel they are experiencing discrimination during the redundancy process. The union is involved in NHS Staff Side meetings to collectively raise concerns about the process. PDA members are encouraged to talk to their PDA Representative about their concerns so that their views can effectively be represented to their employer.

NHS Reps play a vital role in ensuring members are treated fairly in this difficult process. The PDA is encouraging members to become reps to ensure that pharmacists’ voices are heard and colleagues have access to informed, local support throughout organisational transitions. Training and support are provided.

Many members are facing increased pressure following restructuring and redundancies. Attendees were reminded of the support available through Pharmacist Support and encouraged to seek help where needed.

The PDA will continue to provide updates and support to members as the NHS reorganisation progresses.
